The first step of every project is demolition, and this was no different.  The previous owner left the building pretty clean, but as you can see, there were two workbenches, several wall-mounted cabinets, a shelf, an old hot water heater, an old exercise machine and some paint buckets,

So after about 5 hours, we have an almost-clean sheet of paper to work with.  After I took these pictures, I removed the last workbench  and the sink cabinet, leaving a completely bare structure.
